About
Your Host,
Leslie Howard
Les Howard is the winemaker at Long Island's largest and most popular
winery, Pindar Vineyards. He "brings an open, youthful, experimental style
to his winemaking," according to noted wine critic Michael
Braverman. New York Times wine critic Howard
Goldberg described his sauvignon
blanc as "a tropical young star" and "wonderfully aromatic." He is
the winner of the prestigious Best Red Wine award for his cabernet franc at
the New York Wine and Food Classic, 2006, and many double-gold and gold
medal awards. Also, Dan's Papers voted Les Howard "Best Winemaker" in its
2007 Best of the Best Awards. He is accomplished in a broad range of wine
styles, creating lighter, food-friendly wines as well as full-bodied wines
that grow more elegant and complex with age. This talented young man set his
sights on becoming a winemaker with his first appointment as a cellar master
more than fifteen years ago, and he learned the craft alongside the region's
top winemakers. Working in agriculture also brings him back to his roots –
his family has owned land and farmed on the East End since the mid-1600s.
Les Howard's unique and authentic wines have been instrumental in helping to
define the Long Island style, but his passion doesn't stop there; it
extends to wines from all regions of the world, especially France, Italy and
Spain. An avid traveler, he loves to visit wine regions like Bordeaux,
where, as an industry insider, he receives invitations to taste wine and
trade stories with fellow winemakers at world-famous chateaux as well as at
small, down-to-earth wineries that only the locals know.
